Background: The first event at NWSS was in 2019. The event was coordinated by Robin Pittack. PDCA was significantly involved on many levels as far as marketing/fundraising both online, in The Dexter Cattle Journal magazine and onsite at the event itself. After that first year, the "participants" created a "committee" to try to share the burden and decision making so as to create a better event going forward. PDCA was not asked to be involved in/on this committee. Sponsorship of this event in 2020 was requested, but in liu of cash, sponsorship was in the form of assistance. PDCA provided website space and credit card processing for fundraising/ money mgmt purposes. PDCA provided design and printing costs for the show brochure. For 2021, the request is $500 cash for Premiums (awards) and handle the credit card donations from the PDCA website as it has in the past. Pros: Possible National exposure for the breed, positive feedback from Dexter breeders at large. Association neutral. Cons: Premiums go to the winners only. Most breeds use NWSS to be a meeting place to sell stock. They advertise "see us in the stockyards". For Dexters though, the participation with animals at this venue is small for many reasons, but mostly due to the time of year: Denver in January, and will likely stay small, but "attendance" by both breeders and potential buyers could easily be increased with better marketing and planning. Its an exciting venue! To Consider: What this event needs is more participants and marketing to encourage it. As it stands now, it is reliant on Facebook and word of mouth. Travel, time off, entry fees, lodging, meals... Its expensive to participate not to mention the travel safety conditions that are likely involved which are the biggest deterrent. Maybe we offer to pay entry fees, or a block of nearby hotel rooms to try to improve attendance? Another consideration: PDCA must honestly evaluate the cost benefit to the Dexter breed: Is this money well spent? The better place to market Dexters would be to have a booth in the indoor trade show hall where 100,000 people stroll thru over 3 weeks time. Dexter need to be represented here, but how? and to who?
